Fashion Trends summer 2021

As the world opens up again, we’re all about to swap out our pj’s and sweats for some fashionable fun this summer season. After over a year of restrictions and lockdowns here in Ireland, Irish women are more than ready to dress to impress, as we finally get the chance to reconnect with friends and family – indoors and outdoors!

But fashion may well have been the last thing on your mind recently, so here’s your chance to catch up with the top trends in women’s fashion for Summer 2021. I think we are all ready for a summer to remember, filled with fun, sun and fabulous fashion…

So, what’s hot this season?

1.     Dust off the Denim

It’s safe to say that most of us were not rocking our denim jeans while stuck at home but now as we step back out into the world, denim is making its comeback. Whether you’ve been flicking through Insta or other social media in the last year or caught up on current styles on TV or in the papers,  you’ll be aware that Gen Xers have declared skinny jeans are OUT. This has been a tough pill to swallow for most millennials and if you’re in that category, you might be tempted to hold onto them a while longer. But in reality, you’ll probably find they’ll begin to look outdated as new cuts become more popular.

Flares had their moment in the sun in the past too but right now - it’s all about the slim boot cut jeans!

The good news about the slim boot cut jeans is that they don’t stray too far from the skinny jean look - which can make the transition a little easier for die hard skinny jean wearers. They look super sleek, are more flattering for most people and pair really well with heeled ankle boots. So really, what’s not to love?

2.     Flower Power

Florals are still very much on trend for this summer season. After a dreary year full of limitations and not a lot of colour in our lives, Irish people became much more akin to nature walks and excursions. So this trend almost feels representative of what so many people crave - to be outside, surrounded by nature.

Incorporating fun and playful colours with floral patterns can add that little pop of freshness to your summer wardrobe.

3.     Leave the Home in Monochrome

Style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy were known to effortlessly rock the monochrome look in the 50s and 60s. Since then, designers like Coco Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent have shown us that a polished monochrome look can make any woman look powerful yet elegant at the same time.

With the fourth wave of feminism taking social media by storm, this trend could not have resurfaced at a better time. Embrace your inner #GirlBoss and strut your stuff in some edgy but sleek monochrome looks this summer.

4.     Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses have been a long-time staple of summer wardrobes and I’m happy to say they continue to be on trend for summer 2021. What’s great about the maxi is the versatility it offers. Whether you dress it up with a pair of heels for a fancy event or dress it down with some cute sandals or trendy canvass flats – you can’t go wrong with a maxi for casual summer outings. Best of all, the flowy, breathable nature of the maxi dress is flattering for almost all body types, as well as being easy and comfortable to wear. If you haven’t been wearing maxi’s in recent years – this really is a great summer to give it a go and change up your summer wardrobe.

5.     Oversize Trend

It’s safe to say that after a year (and more) at home, comfort has become a significant element in what people are looking for in fashion today. This also ties in with the oversize trend. In recent times, fashion has been going loose. The emphasis is no longer just on custom fits and skin tight clothes.  So, fear not, saying goodbye to your pj’s and sweats doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to all of that comfort we’ve grown accustomed to!

6.     Taking back Trousers

While we spoke about the importance of comfort in this year’s fashion must haves, the same goes when we talk about trousers. As we adjust back into wearing them for the first time in a long time,  don’t worry about trying to squeeze back into those tight fitting, tailored trousers. This season it’s all about the loose-fit, ultra-wide trousers styles.

7.     Thin Cardigans

Minimal knitwear is one of the biggest trends to come out of the fashion industry recently. Again it’s all about embracing the comfort factor and being casual in a stylish, easy manner. While we would all love to step outside in our summer dresses or tops and enjoy the sun without wrapping up, this is still Ireland so to add an extra touch of style while combatting the chill, minimal knitwear is the way to go!

8.     Tie Dye

Tie dye is everywhere this season! What seemed to start out on social media as a trending activity to do while stuck at home, top brands have incorporated this fun style into this years must have fashion looks. It’s a far cry from the psychedelic Woodstock tie dye styles that first come to mind however – it’s all about the tie dye prints on slinky silk materials that really give it an elevated look. Take it a step further by pairing it with modern accessories like sharp sunglasses and metal look bags.
